Hi all,
I am about to undertake a job where I have 8ft wide garage doors fitting with a course of 10 bricks over the top. The wall is double skinned.
The doors frame is 7cm, so an overall spance of about 8'7" or 260cm.
At my building suppliers they have different lintels, of course some are much more expensive than others....

What can I realistically use?
The concrete ones are 100x65x2700mm

which is good for my brick height of 65mm

There are also L shaped...

carvers supply a 3000mm concrete
http://www.carvers.co.uk/products/C...DEEP-3000MM-R22-UNIVERSAL-PRESTRESSED/P113591

This seems a good solution, although the depth is 100mm whereas my brick is 65mm and will throw out the brick pattern on the rest of the wall face.

or... should an RSJ be used?

I have used two 100x65x2700mm concrete lintels on some 7ft wide doors at the other end of the garage, but wasn't sure if they would be man enough for the other end of the garage with a wider opening.

I aim to at some time in the future, lay some roof trusses on top as I would like a pitched roof. Bearing this in mind...

Any thoughts,
thanks, Jim

Using a 100 x 65 concrete lintel over a span of 8ft + would be madness.

Use the 220 deep lintel, though of course it will be a lot heavier.

I thought as much, though using a 65x 100 x 2700 was fine for 7ft it seems

You have probably been lucky. If you look in the manufacturers load tables, you will find the recommended spans are a lot less than that.

That extra 12" on the span will increase the bending stress in the beam by at least 20%, prob. more.

Hi Tony,
I called this company...

http://www.less2build.com/ig-lintel-box200-600mm-solid-wall-lintel-200mm

and they recommended a box lintel with a height of 215mm at 3m long - cost £152 inc delivery.
Will have a load bearing of 30kn which I am told is more than adequate for the job in hand.

Phew... it does make me wonder if the other end of my garage is now adequate over the 7ft span, but I was assured by the builders it was ok.

I am going to have to wait and see. I aim to load a pitched roof over the garage one day and need these lintels to comply with whatever any building inspector will expect to be in place. I may have to replace the concrete ones already in place if needs be with another metal box section.

Cheers for the warning.
Jim
