Hello, I have a borehole pump to fill a garden pond and its stopped working. Someone left it switched on without the outlet taps opened for a while and I suspect that is the cause. Anyway, I have hauled it out and it works out of the water (only ran it for a second as I know that can mess them up) but when I drop it down the bore it doesn't work. There is a control box on the side of the house with a reset switch - not quite sure what that does exactly.. but it clicks when pressed but the motor doesn't start. Its a City pumps SP4, if that means anything to anyone. And its on a single phase supply. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Could get air locked , have you tried back filling with water to ensure no air is trapped?

I don't think this one fares too well......these pumps need a through flow of water or they overheat big time, surprisingly.
Time to exhume the thing and strip down, I guess!

the thing is... the motor runs when I haul it out of the bore and try it (for a second only) on the surface. When it is submersed however... it doesn't start. My latest theory is that the start capacitor in the control box mounted on the side of the house might be faulty. These motors need a higher start voltage than running voltage I think. How does that sound as a working theory? I think I could probably replace the capacitor myself quite cheaply.

Personally I just don't know.....the function of the capacitor is to actually start the motor and instruct it which way to turn, but some motors also have a run capacitor.
Does the capacitor smell or show any sign of burning? If so, then it's faulty for sure. It may be worth a punt replacing yours, but perhaps a word with the manufacturer could help?

I don't suppose you can drop it in a bucket/barrel/water butt to test it where you can see it..? They seem to vary in length from two feet to two metres. Could it be a dodgy cable or connection?
