relocated electrical socket... now have a large/deep gap in skirting board

what would be the best way to deal with this?

I am assuming that there are no cables/wires there any more?

If so then its not an electrical issue. Either put in a new piece of skirting, or backfill the void with something (expanding foam/mortar/bonding, and fill over.

Or ask on the decorating forum!

There are wires and cables there..

However these wires have no electricity flowing through them as the house was rewiired years ago... and the electrician never removed/placed a blank plate in its place

So I'm thinking of using expandable foam, some filler and then sand to a smooth finish

Does this sound like a good idea?

If you're sure the cables are dead, that would be one way of doing it. However, you might well find that filler over foam will eventually crack (particularly if the layer of filler is fairly thin). Assuming that the hole is in a wooden skirting, and if it wasn't too difficult, you'd probably be better off trying to insert a bit of wood into the hole (maybe supported/held by expanding foam, or PU glue), and then filling/sanding as necessary to get the desired finish.

Kind Regards, John
