Sounds like the element has gone. You will need to safely isolate the appliance, take the unit to pieces, trace and remove the offending element, trot off down to your local element shop, get a new one, fit it, put it all back together, reconnect the supply and test it. This is quite a complicated job for a novice and I would strongly getting someone to do it for you.
