I have my washing machine plugged into a B&Q plug-in RCD. This is getting hot (just in the top left corner) even when the machine is switched off. I believe that there is a solenoid in these devices which are constantly working so some warmth is normal. Is that true? Re-wire due soon with integral RCD but I like to be safe for the moment. Unfortunately the plug concerned doesn't have an on/off switch and is hard to reach, so that's why the plug is always live when the RCD is in.

I know some have a history of getting warm, that does not make it right!
I would personally return it and go to an electrical wholesalers and fit and purchase a RCD protected socket!

Just out of interest why do you feel the need to protect this appliance with an plug-in RCD? Do you protect all your electrical loads this way?

It may be a good idea to RCD protect appliances where water and electricity are in close proximity though.

Class I washing machine that is earthed should not be a significant hazard.

There are millions of those in the UK that are not RCD protected.

The washing machine wont even care if the heating element goes faulty! The RCD might! As will the washing/user of that.

Personally I think there is more and more evidence of these adaptable plug-in RCDs having hot spots and cannot be good for the components and potentially dangerous. So if RCD protection is required on a load, do it by quality products.
