So - anybody care to put forward a convincing argument to show why there isn't actually anything wrong with people deciding to fiddle with their electrics even though they don't understand what they are doing and how things work?

Thanks for the comments so far - very helpful. Anyone know the purpose of diynot? Starting to wonder if it's for those struggling with personal burglary experiences...

Thanks. As has already been pointed out, quite apart from everything else, to use the bare 'earth' wire as a live conductor in that way is totally unacceptable, and unsafe.

Kind Regards, John

Hopefully to stop people like you killing themselves and those who come in contact with the work you undertake! Undertake being a key word.

You have been informed what your problems are, you need now to act in a responsible manner and make or get made things safe!

And unquestionably illegal in England & Wales.

So, to return to your issue.

  • You cannot power the fan from that switch
The place to power it from is where there is live, neutral, switched live and earth for that lighting circuit.
That will probably be at the light itself (depending on how it is wired)
You will need 3-core and earth cable to be run from the fan to the power location
    There are no other options.

Sorry if you have run the wrong cable, to the wrong place and then decorated over it.

As a Benjamin franklin said "“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!”
