Sealing new taps

When I fit new taps I always find it difficult to get a good waterproof seal to the ceramic basin or the bath. Either the basin is not flat or, more likely, the hole for the tap is much too big and the rubber washer slides into the hole when the backnut is tightened.

I have tried a few of the popular suggestions such as silicone sealant and even Fernox leak sealant to stop water running down past the side of the tap.

The problem would be solved if the tap was supplied with something to centralise it in the hole before it was tightened up.

My question is - is there something available commercially or some well kept secret method that I don't know?
