I am told that the mains water supply pipe entering my house is an old type alcathene pipe (about 22 mm OD). How do I connect a metric (22 mm) compression fitting to it? Can I use Hep2O pipe inserts for 22 mm pipes? Can I use 22 mm olives or do I need 3/4" ones?

If it black alcathene then it will be imperial, also there are different types or classes of pipe C & D were the most popular.
Cut a section out & take it with you to the merchants, you will need a special fitting for it as well as an insert for that class of pipe, you can't just use 22mm conex fittings on it.

It will also have class C or D on the side of the pipe in green or blue writing.
