The main switch became stuck, having pressed it in it no longer operated. Therefore, I removed the front panel and managed to get the spring system on the switch to work. After re-assemble the washing machine no longer does anything. Thoughts?

Yes, if one part of the switch (spring) has failed, the odds are so has some other part of the switch (contacts) also failed.
