Back to my old 98se situation (with XP SP2 safely on a different HDD).

Problem, Explorer.exe when using file manager, tending to 'caused error will be shut down unknown module etc', but not affecting ongoing tasks at all.
Explorer.exe restarts of it's own accord... I had recently upgraded to latest A² Anti-trojan freeby software.. How could that affect things?

Googled to almost no avail ... Then tucked away in a far corner of the web on another 'help' site ... Same problem .. a suggestion that 'context menu' hooks or whatever may be a problem, well they never have been so far ... Checked it out, file manager, right click a file .. one new option on the menu 'Scan with A² free' ... mmm, hadn't noticed that before

Followed the advice further and downloaded freeware 'ShellExView v1.14 - Shell Extensions Manager'
from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
Superb, disabled that 'A-squared free context menu'. Reboot mc, no more Explorer.exe errors.
The point being, on googling the Explorer.exe problem I found literally hundreds of reported Explorer.exe probs with very little in the way of credible solutions... The 'nirsoft ShellExView kit' allows one to enable / disable at a click, useful tool I think.
;)
