Is the flow connection the one on the top left hand side and the return the bottom right side (looking from front of boiler)? If it is, it looks like the pump (at bottom of boiler) is connected to the return going into the boiler - is that normal?...thought the pump is supposed to be on the flow pipe.

It depends on which way the pump is directing the flow.

If its fitted on the return then it should be pumping towards the boiler.

When the boiler is heating the hotest pipe should be the one coming out from the top.

Its a very solid boiler and will work backwards although the thermostat does not control the temperature very well and you run the risk of cracking the HE.

Cheers Agile...Indeed the pump is pumping towards the boiler and the hottest pipe is the top one.

It has been an excellent boiler...never had a problem other than the pump failing twice over 25+ years...unfortunately for the sake of efficiency/economy it has to go.

Can you recommend a suitable direct replacement (open-vent system)...I think it's a 23kW presently, probably need a more powerful one now. have been looking at a Vaillant ecoMax 28E as a possible.

No you should need a less powerful one because you now have double glazed windows and thick loft insulation.

A 12 kW or 15 kW boiler will probably be adequate.

A Worcester Greenstar 12RI will work on an open vented system.

No I have no loft insulation; took it up when cleaning clearing the loft. May well re-install it later...although can't stand the awful stuff....have double-glazing though. hmmm...so I need a less powerful one?..property is a 11 rad single storey one bathroom, with S-plan system and cylinder in the loft...is 15 kW max enough?...does the 12RI have a S/S heat exchanger?

Yes but whats the format of the house?

Loft insulation will save about 25% of your heating gas consumption! It is very foolish not to have it !

Single storey 3 bedroom, 2 living room, 1 bathroom detached....what else you need to know?

Will put insulation back after plumbing and boarding is done...is there an alternative to that horrible itchy stuff?
