Have a toilet that takes quite a few vigourous turns of the lever before the toilet will eventually flush. The mechanism within the water cistern is a Armitage Shanks Freeflo, which is approximately 15 - 20 years old. Does this need replacing or is their valve or seal that needs replacing?

Most likely needs a new syphon (you can often repair them but they only cost a few pounds).

Or fit a flapper valve which is quieter and does not seem to wear out and has hardly any moving parts (provided your handle is on the front of the cistern, not the side).
