Radiator removal...

I want to remove a radiator in my bathroom to enable me to decorate, but I am not sure how to go about it.

I have a solid fuel heating system, which provides hot water to 3 radiators downstairs and 3 upstairs. The bedroom ones have to be turned up or down manually, but the bathroom one is on all the time; the downstairs ones only heat up if a pump is turned on.

The bathroom radiator is different to the others as it has a pipe connected to the bottom left which comes up through the floor, and it also has a pipe connected to the top right coming in from the loft; It is on all the time.


Why is this the case and is it ok to move it, or remove it altogether?

The reason for the different connection is that this rad acts as a heatsink for your solid fuel boiler. This is a necessary safety feature of the system because you can't instantaneously stop heat being produced (as is possible with a gas boiler, for example).

So you can move the radiator, but you mustn't leave remove it forever.

If you do remove it, then either run down the boiler or keep the rest of the system on while it's out of circulation. I recommend the former.
