No hot water / Hotpoint WM63 / Heating Element ?

Hello.

I have noticed that my Hotpoint wm63p Aquarius 1100 washing machine no longer heats up the water.

The machine did make a rattling racket just the other night, but came alright, now it appears there is no hot water during a wash.

I ran a 95c cycle and felt the door for any heat, but the heat from it was very minimal, just that of the hot water supply.

I would imagine it's the heating element, i was going to buy a new element, but before i purchased one i screwed off various panels for a quick look inside, but couldn't find where the element is fitted. Can anyone help and possibly tell me if this is a hard job ?

Hello again.

Thanks to Breezers post //www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16830 I am down to the element, but i think i'll borrow a mates multimeter before i remove the element and test it first.

Does anyone know what sort of reading i should be looking for, and if readings turn out to be okay what should my next steps be ?

Yes testing the element is simple. Remove the connector plug or spade from the element put the multimeter across the two terminals exclude the earth, and if the element is ok it should read just a few ohms. if the element has gone it will read open circuit

This may sound silly have you activated the (ECONOMY BUTTON ) which is on the facia panel, i often call out to this problem, this will cut the supply to the element

Thanks darky, I did check all the obvious things first like the economy button, I have a mechanical background, so it wise to go through the obvious things first.

It was the element, it was pretty straight forward to replace. It looks like it was damaged by a 20p piece, as this was lying just below the element and was obviously what was making the rattling racket.

Multimeter showed that the original element was knackered, so £19:99 for a new one and hey presto !!

To think I was just about on the verge of saying F#%# it I’ll just buy a new machine, can’t be bothered stripping it down, without really knowing what I am looking for. Thank god I didn’t. That’s thanks to breezers pics. Now I may still manage to get my LCD flat screen before Crimbo after all !!
