phone call from a friend, says , heating , boiler fires , heats rads for 5 min shuts off then refires after 10 min and so on.thinks it could be same on dhw. system is ideal classic vented fully pumped. any ideas. he says pumps running. i was thinking maybe a broken impellor, .house is 5 yr old. any other ideas.

You don't state if there is a 3 port valve in the set up. When you say 'heats rads for 5 mins and shuts off' sounds like a 3 port valve that is not functioning in CH only position, but does function in the mid position when HW and CH are shared. It would not stay in this position long because the HW would soon be satisfied and it then should go to CH only. This I feel could explain your problem if a 3 port valve is used.
got to look tomoz. dont know whether two, two or one three port is used.im under the impression its doing the same on hot water.
