My old gaff had a boxed in soil pipe running 4 metres, starting 6" off the ground, sloping to ground level where it left the house. Never had any problems in the 2 years I was there. 'not much of a slope' is my answer!
BTW, I didn't know this, but a soil pipe does not actually contain soil, at least not the garden variety I am used to. It wasn't very nice.

the optimum fall for foul drains is 1 in 40, or 25mm every metre.
