Hi,

I am currently trying to help my Mum decorate her lounge. I have stripped the top surface of the wall paper off so that the paper backing can be removed with a steamer.

On the outside and inside (where it meets the main wall again) corners of the chimney breast near the top I have noticed that there are a couple of pink or orange stains on the paper close to the ceiling. The chimney has been boarded up for decades now and when questioning my mum the small vent in the skirting has been closed.

Could it be moisture causing the problem inside the chimney and the slowly seeping through to mark the paper?

If it is caused by damp what can be done to solve it? I have opened the vent again so that air can circulate (and spiders).

Any advice or guidance would be gratefully recieved.

Thanks

The vent SHOULD NOT have been boarded up.

This can cause trapped miosture therefore creating damp to appear as stains.

You are prob best getting someone who is qualified to check for damp. Ask them to write you a report. Just to be safe.

Also, DO NOT hang Vinyl Wallcoverings in the room. Do not apply any Oil-Based paints onto walls or ceilings. If you did then you will make the possible damp situation worse.
