Best way to prep for glossing woodwork?

I am due to gloss skirtings etc. However they are not in the best of condition. They have been chipped and I'm concerned that just sanding and painting over will still show up the different levels of paint on the woodwork. Any tips, other than stripping back the skirtings completely please?

Make good any cracks, gouges or indents on your skirtings, give them a sand down, then get some undercoat and paint over the bits you have filled.
When dry, undercoat your whole skirtings, then gloss, you might have to do 2 undercoats if your skirtings are really old and dirty looking.

Why not go for either a satinwood or eggshell finish, wont show up so much imperfections as gloss would.

As spice says... Though I'd try some fine surface polyfilla on the gouges/chips, carefull though it dries harder than normal fillers. Too much = a lot of sanding..

I would undercoat it first..then fill, it sticks better to undercoat then gloss..then touch it up with undercoat again before you gloss.
