gravel over weeds

Hi,
I have a large area around my small medival house in France that needs gravel.
Each year I go with the family I spend three days strimming/cutting etc. Nightmare !!!
The ground is a little uneaven .
My plan is to lay some sort of breathable material down and then have 30 tonnes of 5-20ml Graded gravel delivered.
The drive will only be used for about 3-4 weeks a year so i hope to get away with it.
Please please please.. any suggestions on what to lay down the grass before the gravel .
I have even thought of spraying some serious weed killer on the grass area a few weeks before I gravel !!??
Really any advice would be appreciated.

well its not that urgent if you are here and the house is in France is it?

when i graveled mine i killed the grass with as you say weed killer, then membrane on top.

trouble with mine we do have a slight slope so the gravel does shift a bit

These may be Triffids, in which case an ice-cream van may help

Alternatively, look for a geotextile material (google) which will do the job
