I am going to put some gates across a double width drive, and have been looking around for gate posts - since the gap is about 5 metres wide, I want 6 or 8 inch wooden posts. I haven't been able to source these easily (or quickly) so I was wondering about using a 4" post and bolting this to a concrete post to give it strength.

Any views? Or anyone know a good stockist (in Herts)

I would use steel tubing, something like 4" or 5" square by 4 or 5 m/m thick.
Get a local fabrication shop to weld hinges on, and cap the top.
These if kept painted, will last a lifetime.
