Hi everyone :)

Am hoping someone can advise me... we've only recently got a garden and next week are having two gigantic leylandii conifers cut down and shredded.

I've heard conflicting advice about whether we should take the resulting cuttings to the tip or whether we can use them to fill up the bottom of two walled flower beds before we put topsoil on top. I've heard that they're acidic and shouldn't be used. Is this true?

All advice gratefully received!

Thanks!

you can use the shreddings as a mulch or compost them. they will prevent anything else growing for a year or two until they have rotted.

I have used Leylandii shreddings as a mulch, they suppressed all weeds but also my Dahlias, Peony and most Tulips died over the winter.

the trees seemed OK, and some small stuff round the edges that was not under the mulch. I have now raked it off and replanted the bed, it seems very clean of weeds even though it was partially dug and has been well-watered.

I would not bury them as they may take a very long time to rot. You could use then as a mulch round established bushes, though.

Thanks JohnD, that's really helpful. We'll be careful to let the cuttings rot down first then to be on the safe side...

they will rot faster if you mix them well with grass cuttings, leaves, other soft green stuff, and a bit of wormy soil, and keep damp.
