Stagnant water smell

I have a bosch washing machine, which has started to smell following a washing cycle. I have cleaned the soap dispenser drawer, but wondered if I could use a diluted solution of bleach to run through the machine. It smells of stagnant water inside the drum - wondered if I should call out a specialist to have a look at it?

Yes, do a service wash( boil wash with no clothes in) also ensure there is not a pool of stagnant water or mould between the door seal & the drum.

Thanks for the reply, I have done a service wash with bleach, but still getting the smell. Do you think that something could be blocked?

please describe the route the waste pipe takes between the machine and the drain (with photos if possible)

p.s. when you did the service wash, what temperature did you use? what temperature do you normally use?

When you took the soap drawer out to scrub it with hot water, did you also scrub out the slot in the front of the machine that the drawer slides into?

Bleach kills bacteria but it does not dissolve sludge.

Did you find a cure? My machine smells terrible - I wondered if there was something decaying between the drum and drum assembly - an old sock or something! Doesn't look too simple to strip the drum apart though..

it's usually sludge build-up from low-temperature washes and excess powder and softener.

Hi,
a tip passed on to me some years ago that I regularly do is to run the machine through an empty wash cycle on its hottest setting but using some soda crystals mixed with the washing powder. The high temperature and soda cryatals help to break down the sludge and kill the bacteria that develop in them. Its good for dishwashers too (using dishwasher liquid instead of ashing powder of course). Always clear out your filter before and after doing this.

Works a treat.

I have, and I think things are improving. Having done more research I see that this is quite a common problem. I tried a cup of bleach, followed a few minutes later by a cup of vinegar - then spent the next 30 minutes mopping up the suds coming out of the soap dispenser.. I tried a service wash today with a dishwasher tablet - I'll try other suggestions if the problem persists

a plain MAX HOT wash, with no powder, will wash away a lot of sludge. You can put in cotton towels if you want or just run it with no clothes in there.

You should also look at the route the waste hose takes as they sometimes let dirty water flow back from the sink.

Definately need to do several boil washes with some washing machine descaler (aquasoftner). If really bad could be clogged right through drain hose and plastic chamber in top right corner. Messy job to remove and clean!!

Hi guys I'm new here. I've found this place after searching on google because my clothes smelt stagnant today after I brought them out of the washing machine.

This post in particular has interested me because I ALWAYS have a pool of water between the door seal & drum. There is a hole there (im assuming) for it to drain away, but it never drains.

The machine has been quite smelly this past few weeks as well & has been stinking out the utility room at times.

I'm only living in the house 3 months so any help would be REALLY appreciated

Hi was actually wondering what relevance "also ensure there is not a pool of stagnant water or mould between the door seal & the drum" this has or basically what it means.

Is the water from there supposed to drain away? The water in mine does not drain & im wondering if it is blocked some how?

two holes at the bottom of the door seal are blocked .

Well, 3 x 90 degree washes later with some soda crystals & its as good as new.
