when doing an EFLI test at a socket or light do you have to unplug loads or take lamps out? Sorry for the silly question but unsure...

It is better with the circuit unloaded, you should have unplugged everything for the IR test anyway.
 
yes......a friend told me before starting any job just check the efli at various points.......so you would recommend removing load and lamps then?

You want the circuit unloaded so the conductor temperature is low as you will be comparing the measured Zs with the tabulated maximum measured Zs ones.
