Moving socket

I'm installing furniture which as luck would have it - runs right down the middle of a double socket. Whats the easiest way of moving it a socket width to the right without causing a real mess?

Well, you could extend the back box into a twin (not a double), and put a blanking plate over the side that you're not going to use.

The problem is if you get rid of a socket completely you also get rid of the safe zones it forms which can be a problem as some of those zones almost certainly contain cables which are not adequately protected for running outside safe zones.

Which directions do the cable(s) come from?
Is this furniture built in or freestanding?
