The correct procedure to remove a damaged slate is to use a tool named "slate ripper" this is a long flat piece of machined steal used to locate the nails holding a slate in place from underneath the slate, once the ripper has located and removed the nail the slate can be removed, to fit a new slate you will need a copper strap, this is fixed to the slates below and once the new slate is inserted and copper strap is folded over holding the slate in place!
