Why are these used in circuits instead of a fuse link?

I would guess it's probably to do with the time it takes to fail in overload conditions, if a device requires a high start current that would pop an ordinary or time delay fuse.

I have seen a similar idea with a fusible link incorporated in a transformer primary winding, using something like Woods metal that melts at about 70 degrees if the transformer overheats regardless of the electrical load.
