security lighting

Just replaced security lights the old ones were run off a plug so I just replaced them however they don't work. Inside new light there is a L1, L, Earth, N. I'm ok with the live neutral and earth but whay about the L1??? Please help the wife's giving me grief

What sort of light have you put up? Is it a PIR? If so the L1 is normally a switched live which can be used to feed another light or as an override. What do you mean by the old ones were run off a plug? Can you explain what you have done and how you have connected up?

cheers for the reply i've sorted it.
Yes the other lights were run off a plug. I think this is wrong surely i must come out my consumer unit?
