Can you believe this ????...

I

imamartian

Hi
One of my beautiful young children has thrown a stone and cracked the outer pane on a small double glazed unit.

400mm x 400mm with patterned glass .... and get this... Yorkshire Windows, who we bought all the windows for the house from have quoted me.......

£450 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They say they have a minimum order policy.....

Apart from the nasty letter i'm gonna send to 'em, any ideas what i can do? or where i can get one small window from? Or do they all do 'minimum order amounts'?

Thanks

There are usually glass Companies in most medium size towns, ie, glass specialists who can cut a simple piece of glass or supply any size double glazed unit. I have ordered, and fitted, a number of D/G units recently, to complete a conservatory, and some of them have been odd, even triangular, in shape.
They cost around £30-£40 each but, you have to fit them yourself. This is not difficult to do and you will find that the glazing bars, ie, the "snap in" members which keep the D/G panel in place, are quite easy to remove and re-fit. The supplier would want to know the size, width, colour of the inside spacers and, also, whether the glass needs to be tempered if it is fitted below a certain height. However, the best way would be to take the old panel as a pattern and get an exact replacement made up.

Where in Derbyshire are you ?. There are a number of local glazing companies who will either supply only, or supply and fit. Take a look in the YP.

Thanks guys (except for breezer  )

I live in Chesterfield, and Stores Road sounds familiar.

I chose YW because they fitted all the windows. Plus they have just quoted me for a front door... but i think it's disgrace quoting me £450 for something that would cost £40. They won't be getting my order for the door.

And as for you Breezer... next time you go to the pub, i hope they charge you thirty quid for your pint - after all it won't be their fault you want a beer :)

Buy a load more spare DG units until your order just goes over £450 - then you'll have some spares in the loft when they break the next one :)

you don't "get it" do you.

Went to Grassmoor Glass in the end (thanks HandyHands), they charged me.... £14.50.. !!

i appreciate that now.
But what annoys me is that the woman on the phone didn't say "No, we wouldn't do that small piece of glass", she said "yes, but it would cost you £450!"
A subtle difference.

Appols for opening up an old thread but I'm hoping that IMAMARTIAN, WATCHMAKER or anyone else could tell me how to get these snap fit members out to remove a panel. Watchmaker wrote

and I assume Imamartian managed it.
They presumably need something thin to prise them out ? but mine are very tight to the point they appear (I know they can't be) seamless where they touch the frame and I've managed to get a knife between glass and fitting member but no reasonable amout of pressure seems to want to move it and trying not to break things.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
