potterton HE Powermax burner failed to light

hi, could anyone help:

Boiler: potterton HE powermax

Problem: burner fails to light and thus locks out.

Question: the control did play up... when the hot water is set on timed (programmed), it would change to \\\"on\\\" and stays \\\"on\\\".
Could the control be the cause to the problem? Would changing it resolve it?
