I currently have a (very strongly glued down) thin lino in the kitchen. This is glued to a hardboard floor. I want to lay floor tiles - is it advisable to lay tiles on top of lino? I am reluctant to pull the lino up in case I cause more problems for myself by creating an uneven surface?

I wouldn't worry about it as you can overcome that using tile adhesive. It would be best to rip up the old lino as the tile adhesive would grip better on floor screed than lino, you don't want to rip it up again if the lino start to give you problems.
