Hi, came home on friday night to find the boiler won't ignite. there is a spark as far as i can see through the view hole. we have had the pcb replaced following the watchdog thing regarding overheat lockouts so we now have the replacement kit pcb. following trying to light 5 times, the boiler locksout and the red light flashes every second. we know it's not the fan because that's new. all the wires have been checked for continuity.
we definately have gas cos the cooker is working. the pcb is only 7 months old and the boiler is ten years old. any ideas would be much appreciated. thanks

Assuming what you say is accurate and you do indeed have a good spark present, then it only leaves the gas valve stuck.

Check for 230V at gas valve terminals. If no voltage then could be(unlikely) pcb gone again.

If no spark then check aps.

Thanks Dave. that was quick! should you get output always at gas valve terminals or do you check it when the boiler is trying to light? you say pcb gone again, have you known of any new ones to go that quick? potterton won't fix it for free if it is that dispite it only being 7 months old. that's not right is it.

Check for voltage at gas valve whilst boiler is trying to light.

I am not saying I think the new pcb has gone, but more of 'just because something is new, don't assume it is not faulty' ;)

Thanks again Dave. will check terminals and hope for the best, whatever that might be. i understand a gas valve is pretty pricey to replace too.

If you can measure the resistance and give the readings of the top two pins and the bottom two pins of the gas valve and report back.

I'll do that poxi but might have to wait til tomorrow cos battery flat in tester now(typical). Thank you so much for your help guys :)

Hi, have checked output to gas valve. it's ok. does it now point to stuck gas valve. if so i guess it's a corgi job cos it's gas?

Yes corgi job indeed. If you ask just for the valve to be fitted you may save money on them coming out and diagnosing it.

I've since been informed that the gas valve solanoid(probably spelled wrong) is magnatized during operation. if no magnetic pull, it's a sure sign of valve failure. is someone having me on?

Is there gas to the appliance and of the correct pressure?
Basic checks first.
Corgi engineer can check this before whipping out the GV
