can anyone tell me how to drill into an upstairs cast iron
soil pipe for the sink waste to go into it?

If the pipe is very old, be prepared to have to replace it. I have "stitch" drilled one with a couple of new drill bits and then rounded out the hole with a decent half round file. Very time consuming and difficult if you are working off a ladder (forget the h & s advice please, we all do as needs must from time to time and its my choice). Sometimes its the devil or the deep blue sea

I wouldn't! Now I am not saying there isn't one, only that I am not aware of a boss that you can use to connect to cast iron except as a cast iron pipe fitting.
The question of its existence has been asked on this forum here without reply. If there is such an animal I am sure someone will quickly correct me.

I would either connect into another pipe that runs into it or connect into an existing boss already fitted to the stack.

The other way to do it is to replace the stack in plastic and fit a boss to the new pipe whether its a fitting you use or the less preferred 'strap on' type.

PS when you say Sink do you mean Basin? I cant see why you would want to prepare food upstairs and wash pots unless you are in a flat.

File around the hole and ensure a good clean connection. Use a one and a quarter inch saddle boss (the complete wrap around type) and black silicone around it for good measure to ensure a watertight seal. Allow 24 hours for it to go off before sending any water down it from the wash basin.
Adapt, improvise and overcome. Then bodge it!
