taken old dimmer switch off and there are three sets of wires going into three separate holes it (technical huh!!).......one is blue and black twisted together, next is red and yellow twisted together and last is red on its own. bought new dimmer switch which only has two places for wires, marked L1 and L2.

which wires go in L1 and L2???

help appreciated before i end up in casualty

What are the markings where the wires connect? First instincts are you have a 2 way switch setup i.e. there is also a normal switch elsewhere for the same light. The easiest option in this case is to get a 2 way dimmer switch.

Was this switch/dimmer one of a pair of switches controlling one light ?

If it is then you need to change it for a two way dimmer.

Make a note of which wires go where before you take the old switch off.

It will help us help you if/when you run into trouble later on ;)

Turn power off before doing anything with a screwdriver!
