On a flat roof, can I simply cross-nail the joists to the wall plates using 100mm nails, or do I have to use twisted galvanised straps?

Thanks

Both: nails connect the joists to the plate; the twisted straps fix to the blockwork to prevent the roof taking off in high winds.

Thanks. It has got "L" shaped straps securing the plates to the blockwork, one every metre (approximately). What spacing are the twisted straps also required (joists are on 400 ctrs)?

Ah, we're talking at slight cross-purposes. You could have used the twisted straps rather than the L-shaped ones to hold the whole lot down and omitted the L ones completely.

So, you can either rely on the pull-out resistance of the nails to keep the roof connected to the plate - works most of the time, but is a bit more of a problem a)if you've got a mahoosif eaves overhang and/or b) you're in an area where the building is exposed and subject to high winds.

If you're unsure put a twistie every 2m or so. Belt and braces approach.
