Will this air brick do more harm than good (picture)

Hi All,

Our new house has an air brick at the front of the property, but is below ground level as can be seen on the picture below:

I know that air bricks are important for preventing damp, but my fear is that because of the positioning of this one it's just going to collect and channel rain water under the house and cause more damp than it prevents.

Would like to have your views on whether it's better to keep this air brick or to block it up and fill in the hole.

It's hard to see from the photo whether or not it's been constructed such that water running into that gully has a route to a soakaway, but it really ought to have.

Also, you could mitigate the problem by having some protection around the hole to prevent surface water running into it, and by having a loose cover to prevent water falling in but not stopping air flow.
 
How about using a few bricks and a small paving slab, and building a 'periscope'
