I am about to have a new kitchen fitted and have found an old internal doorway (complete with door) hidden behind an existing utility cupboard. The plan is to hang a new wall unit over where the door is currently. I am concerned that if the doorway is blocked up with plasterboard it will not withstand the weight of the wall unit hung on it. If this is the case, and the doorway needs to be bricked up are there building regs governing this sort of work?
Any advice gratefully received. Cheers.

no need for b'regs.

i would certainly remove the existing door and casing. stud the aperture, plasterboard and skim.
you could also include some timber noggins to deal with the wall unit fixings, whist you're at it.

if the sole plate is say 50mm thick then i would be inclined to use 4" (100mm) screws.

drill a 7mm hole, insert brown plugs and use 4" - 10's or 12's.

don't forget to drill the hole deep enough. ;)
