Usually a hole in the outer sheath of the heating element, allowing it to short circuit to earth. Modern dishwashers are not easy to work on so you may be best getting someone in to fix it.

Thanks for the advice. We opened it up today and found heavy corrosion on the main motor, we believe the motor has seized. Water had leaked in because the main feed hose had leaked. We tried drying it out and trying it again but with no luck.
Do you know how much a new motor is likely to cost? and is it a viable repair?
Thank you in advance for any advice anyone can give.
Retail price of the motor is about £109. If the appliance is less than 5 years old it would be cheaper to get Hotpoint to come and do the repair as there is a 5 year parts warranty.
