Replacing an old meter?
Reply with quote Thanks

HI, can someone please advise what is involved in getting an old meter replaced?

Ours is approx 30+ years old, the old dial type.
The whole house is going to be rewired over time & I'm thinking of maybe getting the meter replaced with a newer digital one, perhaps one of the smart meters mentioned in the news.

I'm with EDF.

What sorts are available these days? what will they do with the existing CU & installation etc?
What does it generally cost? (as its very old, should there be a charge)?

Cheers.

Normally you will get a new meter as and when your DNO sees fit.

AFAIK, you can't ask for a new meter unless there is something wrong with the existing one, and even then they may install a reconditioned analogue* meter.

It should have been replaced within the last 20 years. Is there a card saying when it was last changed?

If they do replace the meter, they will not do anything with your installation.

ring your supplier up and ask them to fit an isolator switch as your planning on having a rewire done and ask for your meter to be upgraded to a digital one too. When they fit the isolator switch they will also install your new meter - as for charge it depends where you live, its ranges from free to about £80. They wont touch the CU as its your property - but having an isolator switch fitted will allow you to have it swapped safely.
