Have sash windows on upper floor of my 3 storey town house, nigh on impossible to paint without expensive scaffolding. No great DIYer but looking at them made me think I could remove the wooden beads, remove the spiral balance (I think that's what I have from looking at internet) and the windows will come out enabling me to paint them and the frame and cill outside without getting scaffolding/risking life and limb.

My question is: is this likely not to be so simple and what problems might I come up against? Looks as though the wooden bead would easily break on removing but think I could fit a replacement easily enough (are they standard sizes??). One window has to be propped open so I assume a problem with the spiral balance on that one - can replacements be easily found?

All hints/tips appreciated, please tell me if it's a silly idea and why!
