escort ghia tdi judders quite a bit when idleing and when revved produces alot of smoke but when driving nothing :confused: any ideas thanks

What colour is the smoke?

Is the engine using oil?

Black smoke: over fuelling

Blue smoke: lubricating oil burning

White smoke: water vapour.
 
not sure about it useing oil as only had the car a couple of days and not really been anywhere yet done around 40 miles in it. the smoke looks white.
 
White smoke from diesel engine may be head gasket has water level gone down

water and oil levels seem ok but like i say upto now only done around 40 miles. will have to see when i'm back at work tommorrow as normally involves alot of travel.
 
Change of fuel and air filter will probably sort it out.
Whats it like starting from cold?
