I've found lost of information about removing chimney stacks but I wanted to know if its safe to raise the height of the chimney breast arch, leaving the stack in place?

I have a chimney stack in the kitchen, its not in use and was open when we bought the house a number of years ago. We currently have a small fridge in the recess, however we are replacing the kitchen and would like to raise the height of the arch so we can fit a fridge freezer in the opening instead. It's currently about 2ft deep, 4ft across and 5ft high. I was thinking that I could remove a few rows of bricks and then place a lintel at the required height, about 8ft high.

Is this possible or safe?? I would not be altering the pillars either side of the arch so are there any building regs covering this?

Advice appreciated please icon_smile.gif

Yes, it's ok to do what you intend. Just make sure that everything behind the face brickwork is supported as well, though.
