base for railway sleepers?

Good afternoon all.

I'm about to put in some new softwood railway sleepers in my back garden and just want to check on the base.

I'm stacking to 500mm height.

I've read on here people use a lean mix to bed them.

My question is - what sort of depth do I use? And is it necessary to put in hardcore under this?

at that height you could even bed them on compacted soil, dependent on waht they are being used for.

Thanks for the reply.

The sleepers are going to form a raised bed, hiding an usightly old wall.

I've dug out 6cm of soil and was going to just use a bed sharp sand to help get levels right. But when I read that some people use a lean mix I wondered if that was essential.

6cm?? did you dig it out with a spoon?

if its for a raised bed, then you dont need it. All you need is a level base to start with, so either some compacted sharp sand or compacted soil is fine. Get the first row nice and level and then its easy from there.
