EXPERTS?

I am a Locksmith, attempting to find a distributor for \\\"Ruko\\\" brand locks. When I looked up mortis locks, I find PLUMBERS listed as experts? Would you ask a plumber to secure your personal belongings? Or how about an electrician to do plumbing? I for one would not. I actually find this absurd, and even though I just registered on this site, I will not return.

what you on about I just did the same search and it found 30 hits for mortise locks only at hit 18 and 19 did it mention plumbing and that was beacause of the word LOCKShield valve. Sorry the search was not sophisticated enough, perhaps if you had unchecked the plumbing box in where to search you wouldn't have been so disappointed.
Whinging git springs to mind.

I knew a guy who claimed to be a locksmith his toolkit seemed to comprise of a crowbar and a hefty shoulder 90% of the time

I know what he is getting at. At the top of the page (this topic originated from...) click on "Mortise locks". Then at the bottom click "experts in your area", and it changes to "Plumbers".

That is his gripe.

However you would have to be pretty silly to ring up a plumber to have a lock changed!

Saying that, I took my car to Vauxhall and APPARENTLY it was fixed by an engineer rather than a mechanic... Perhaps next time I go to the butchers my meat will be cut by a surgeon?

The internet is a fantastic resource for finding information, suppliers etc. But is inherently clumsy and frustrating sometimes, but if I wrote and complained about every innacurate piece of information and misleading link, I wouldn't get anything done!

There are new search engines coming online in the near future that will produce more reliable results... by which I mean the information will be more reliable, and somehow rated depending on where they come from.

An example might be... you are sitting there in your chair one Sunday afternoon and think "Hmmm, I fancy doing a bit of reading on African-American history."

Now, if you were to go to a current search engine and type "Malcolm X" you might get links to Black Panther websites saying "Yeaaaah", or you might get sites for the KKK saying "Nooooo". Or you might get the page you were looking for, one from a bias-free viewpoint that chronicles the life and times of a man born as Malcolm Little from Nebraska. But you will of course get a million and one DVD shops offering to sell you the film "Malcolm X".

I was taught never to trust the internet enough to use it as a firm reference for any report. If you find an article in "New Scientist" then you know it has been checked, and the reputation of the journal is at stake, so you can trust it within the boundaries of doubt of some good scientific minds. But the dross I have read on the internet, written by people who patantly have no idea what they are talking about.

I would like it if you could localise the internet more, you have the option (say on Google - my preferred) to search UK only. Which is far from foolproof, but it would be nice if you narrow this down further.

I've not registered my website yet, but should think about doing that soon, but also I'm not sure about metatags etc. It would be nice if you had a form that you could enter specific information like the area you cover aswell as key words.

Finally, it never seems to amaze me how innocent seeming words can lead you to the darker corners of the net...

My mum is a primary school teacher. Her school got it's internet line installed and hooked up to the network. They had some Local Authority provided net-nanny type software installed, and decided to google their names. My mum went in, found that there was someone of her name a hundred years ago in New England on some genealogy website... the others all found similar. But it got to one woman, with a seemingly innocent name, and there was a porn site! It got through the net nanny and sure enough, there was this website dedicated to a porn star with a normal name. Lucky they checked, imagine if one of the kids thought "Hey, I will look up Mrs Smith on Google!"

Not entirely linked, other than that it involves a naked woman... I used to be taught art by a lady who appeared on the infamous Page 3 of the Sun. You would think, if you have ever been photographed for a national newspaper, with your top off, the last job you should consider is teaching in an all-boys school full of hormone-filled adolescents who haven't seen a girl since they were 11.

And no, it wasn't a rumour... one tactless s*d stuck the picture to her whiteboard
