Hi guys I have fitted an external lamp which has a 240volt - 40watt bulb and I will be connecting a dusk till dawn sensor in line can I use a 3amp digital timer in this circuit or will the load be to much for it. I was looking at this one on screwfix,

I do not need this on all night long that is why I want to use a timer and there is not room in the fitting for an energy saving bulb, it is merely a light with the house number on it facing the path so people can find the house in the dark

Hate to get his 'leccy bill!

Obviously meant 40W
(at least I hope he did!  )

I hope so too unless the outside light looks like this....

Its because you said

240volt - 40amp bulb

that you are getting The P taken

I dont see the point of having a timer and a photocell.

why not get an "energy saving lamp" with built in photo cell (they do exist)

that way it uses less electricery, (yes i did mean to spell it that way) and no additional timer / photocell req'd

I dont see the point of having a timer and a photocell.

I've use the same arrangement on many occasions as some people don't want lights on all night, low energy or not. The timer will guarantee a switch off time and the photocell means constant changes to the timer as lighting levels change over the year won't be required.
