I've recently had some work carried out by a local reputable building contractor. Whilst they were on site they broke several items including some ornaments in the lounge (they weren't working in the lounge but had to walk through there for access) and our toilet seat (despite the fact we covered the toilet each day with some cardboard and a dust sheet, they removed it to use it and left it uncovered and it got broken).

Would it be reasonable to deduct the cost of replacing these from their final bill or should we just accept that accidents happen and either stand the cost ourselves or claim on our insurance?

Not really sure where we stand on this one? Any advice would be greatfully received.

Point it out to them and ask them what they are going to do about it. Why should you claim of your insurance, let them claim of theirs.

Before you get anyone in to do a job always ask to see a current certificate of public liability insurance, if they get humpy about it you can be almost certain they dont have one.
Ask your builders if they are willing to deduct costs from your bill, explaining it will be cheaper than the excess on thier policy. Or a higher premium in the future. If they dont have it, dont pay the balance covering costs and repair charges.
