I have a very old house with a cellar, above which is currently just a wooden floor with no insulation. I'd like to insulate this floor, and have been thinking of using Celotex fitted as tightly as possible between the joists. (I don't want to fit anything below the joists if possible, because of limited headroom in the cellar). The cellar itself is quite damp (water flows through in times of heavy rain, there is a pump to get rid of it), but is well-ventilated.
My questions are:
1) Is this a good approach? Any better suggestions?
2) If I do use Celotex, should I fit it right up against the underside of the floorboards, or do I need an air gap? Any likely problems with condensation?
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.
