Cotton or Nylon sash cord?

What is the better choice these days for replacing sash window cord – waxed cotton or nylon?

I think 8mm diameter is right for my windows, how do I make sure?

I would recommend you do not use nylon as I tried and they appear to deteriorate very quickly, I beleive due to the sun. I went back to waxed cotton and they are much better.
