Hi, i've recently purchased an old farmhouse that has had numerous alterations made to it over the years. In two of the downstairs reception rooms, there are open fires that had been cobered up & replace with electric fires. We have has both chimneys swept & one of the them was blocked with a brick so to remoevt he brick we removed the fireback & has a new one installed. Anyway, we have lit that fire today for the first time & the fire seems to be drawing really well but i went upstairs and the adjacent bedroom & WC were filled with smoke along with the loft. :(

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

The second fire is a Baxi Burnall with back boiler. The problem with this fire is that the smoke seems to go up the chimney but comes back doen again & fills the room the fire is in especially with coal. I'm not sure how to work the draught & ive noticed some sort of lever at the top of the fire. Does anyone have any experience of the type of fire, where i can get a manual from & why the smoke is not going up the chimney properly?

Both chimneys have cowls on them.

thanks

Before you kill your self it might be an idea to get someone in that knows what there doing. Carbon monoxide can kill in minuets

If the barn has had alot done to it over the past, possible the fire was swapped for an electric on because the chimmney had bricks damaged or removed?

Might sound stupid question but has the chimmney been capped to prevent water collecting, especially with an electric fire installed?
