I am planning on draining my central heating system, desludging it and refilling it, adding some new inhibitor.

Hasn't been done for years and as I need to replace a radiator, thought it may well be a good opportunity to do it now.

Prior to starting the process of draining the system, I understand that I must ensure that the boiler will NOT fire up by setting the thermostat is set to OFF and setting all control switches to OFF?

Do I also have to physically turn the gas off at the stopcock and extinguish the pilot light? Or will the pilot light go out automatically when the thermostat/control switches are set to the OFF position?

Thanks in advance.

just turn the programmer controls to off. so no call for hw/heating.

leave the gas supply don't need to go that far.

Thanks for that.

One article I read didn't make it clear whether to turn off the gas and another one said you should turn it off.

Thanks for clarifying.

your only draining the water no need to turn the gas off.

all i ever do is make sure the boiler isn't going to fire up. by turning the programmer to off.
you start shutting pilot lights down and bet your life you won't get it to light again. thats the sort of thing that happens when you disturb things.

though timer complete to off should be good enough, being the coward that I am, I would also turn the boiler off.
just in case.
and the spur.
