Hello,
We have a crack running from ceiling to floor in the living room of our 1960's bungalow, which has had 2 dormers added at a later date not sure when but im guessing way more than 20 years ago. The internal crack is quick small cretainly no more than 1mm thick all the way down but we have just recently noticed that we have a matching crack on the external wall, it is maybe a bit wider outside upto maybe 2mm at points and runs from eves down to brickwork but doesnt continue through bricks. Just recently we have also noticed quite a few hairline cracks appearing, from ceilings to doors, in corners of rooms, horizontally, across ceilings etc etc and are now getting a bit concerned and are thinking about getting a structural engineer in, is this our best course of action and can we wait till into the new year or should we get someone in now?
Any opinions help would be greatly appreciated.
We had a conservatory started at the back of our house by what turned out to be a cowboy outfit 2 years ago which building control basically condemned, which has left us with a base, the dwarf walls and exposed brickwork where a previous porch was removed, after a lengthy battle to try and get compensation out of them we gave up and paid ourselves to have the mess in the eves and guttering etc repaired but we are left with the base, not sure if this is relevant but thought i would mention it.

sounds like you have some movement with cracks appering, call out a structural engineer, he will monitor it for a period of time then decide if any work is needed, sometimes it does not need any

You should get an SE to look at it, but it can wait till the other side of this joyous festive season that is almost upon us.

Diagonal crack on inside, stepped on the outside?

Graeme - no need for a pre-crissy panic, leave it 'till Jan. Santa climbing down the chimney won't bring the place down around your ears. As per the last 2 posters get a Structural Engineer in to monitor.
